The article linked below is a really good overview of what led the NHTSA to dive deeper into deaths and injuries caused by Telsa’s full-driving software. I didn’t know what to quote, as there were so many good ones. But this one summarizes the issue.
This is the through-line I’ve been reporting for years, now landing in a regulatory file. Musk privately admitted radar-plus-vision is safer. Engineers begged him to keep radar. Tesla removed it, marketed the camera-only system as able to handle “whiteout conditions” and “all conditions,” and softened the on-screen warning when the cameras go blind. People have died in the conditions the cameras can’t handle, including a pedestrian killed by a Tesla on FSD. Source: NHTSA targets Tesla’s ‘Radar Saves Us’ document in FSD crash probe | Electrek
Yes, I am not surprised. I have been harping on this camera-only foolishness for a long time.
Here’s my rant from 2022 titled: “When the myth of the visionary founder flounders: push back!”
