In the news again: Still ringing in the new year? Try texting – The Boston Globe

Out of the blue, a reporter contacted me because she had read that I regularly send a bunch of text messages on New Year (and Mid-summer). So, now I have another quote.

Are you guys big texters during large events?

As the ball drops this New Year’s Eve, a record number of revelers will hit their keypads, sending festive text messages and emoticon kisses to friends and family using their cellphones.

One thing I didn’t tell her was that I save all my messages in Lifeblog. Much easier to save, considering the amount of messages I normally send in a year.

Hmm, I’ve been in the news a bit too much this past month…

Infoworld on: Mobiles offer more than voice in developing markets

I’d like to think I had some influence on the man making the quote below, but, like me, he’s probably part of a long chain of folks who have been talking about the potential of mobile devices in emerging markets for some time now.

I know that I was brought into this ‘club’ by Chris over a year ago (and I’ve spoken and written about it quite a bit). It’s been great to see as this meme got broader and deeper and now we see so many examples of how folks are not only leap-frogging over fixed telecoms, but also the desktop Internet.

Yeah.

Those subscribers are doing more than talking. "Mobile is becoming a significant way to access the Web and a growing number of people will get their first experience of the Net on a mobile device," said Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, president and chief executive at Nokia, during a recent investors conference.

Tired words: Consumer

Heard it. Don’t like it. Can’t get rid of it.

Consumer – This is a catch-all for the folks who fork over their dear money for something we have made.* All too often it is a term do describe some sort of passive consumption of media. I try hard to use some other term, such as ‘user’ or ‘people’ or ‘subscribers’ or something like that. It’s not easy. But, thinking of the way folks actually use the web, so many folks are actually lurking and reading and watching and listening, and so few actually creating or participating (read more here, via JP). Hence, I think ‘consumer’ just might be sufficient.

You can review all my previous ‘Tired Words’ here on this page.

*A related tired word: ‘end-user’. Ugh.

Has anyone played with Mozes?

Oy, I’m able to delve deeper, partly due to a lazy holiday season and partly due to this being something outside my home country.

But, those few neurons that spot kewl say that this is interesting. And those neurons that love anything simple and sms-y are shivering with delight.

Let’s keep an eye on these folk.

Interestingly, O’Reilly picked them up on their radar early this year, so they’ve been fermenting for some time (read the article here. it’s good).
